Bitumen Markets Raise Slightly Across East Asia

Report Summary

This report examines recent bitumen market trends in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and India. It highlights supply conditions, price changes, and demand variations driven by factors like maintenance schedules, weather, and infrastructure projects. Each country faces unique market dynamics, shaping regional pricing and availability.

Singapore: Rising Export Prices

Bitumen export prices in Singapore kept climbing due to low supply. Most refineries had no August-loading cargoes left. Offers for these cargoes ranged from $420–425 per ton FOB Singapore, with sellers aiming for the higher price.

Malaysia: Tight Supply Challenges

A key Malaysian refinery faced a short-term supply halt earlier in the week ending July 4 due to blending activities. Limited supply from both Malaysia and Singapore has tightened the market, suggesting stronger prices soon.

Indonesia: Balancing Import and Local Supply

Demand for imported bitumen in Indonesia may face competition from affordable local supply in the coming weeks. Buyers in Indonesia increased their purchase offers as cheaper options disappeared.

Thailand: Stable Domestic Stocks

A Thai refinery began a month-long maintenance period. However, local supplies stayed sufficient because importers and refineries were stocked up beforehand. Export cargo availability was limited due to lower production and ongoing maintenance, with July loading prices around $410–415 per ton FOB Thailand.

Vietnam: Steady Demand Amid Weather Issues

Vietnam’s bitumen demand remained stable but was affected by occasional rain, especially in the south. Trading was more active in the northern and central regions. Northern importers actively sought cargoes to restock due to steady demand, while central Vietnam saw stronger consumption driven by highway projects set to finish in August.

India: Monsoon Slows Demand

Bitumen use in India was low due to the ongoing monsoon season. Local selling prices dropped because of weak demand and higher stock levels.
