Demands Surging Up in European Bitumen Market

Report Summary

Cargo prices in northern Europe rose. Bitumen demand nears its early summer peak. Rotterdam HSFO barge prices dipped slightly in early June compared to late May. FOB Rotterdam bitumen cargo premiums to HSFO barges climbed $7-8 per ton, reaching about $50 per ton. FOB Baltic cargo premiums rose $5 per ton to $30-35 per ton.

UK/Ireland & Demand Drop


Good weather recently favored road paving in the UK and Ireland. Early June brought rain, stopping some projects. Bitumen demand weakened. UK demand has been sluggish this year. Suppliers report further declines after years of steady drops.



Construction Climbs in France


French domestic truck prices fell $11-16 per ton to $503-514 per ton delivered in northern and central France. Southern prices dropped $11 per ton to $492-508 per ton. Construction activity is expected to increase in June, typically a peak month. May saw steady gains despite holiday slowdowns.


Poland/Czech Republic & Mixed Price Moves



Polish domestic truck prices rose $11 per ton to $470-481 per ton ex-works. Seasonal demand is improving. Czech domestic truck prices stayed steady at $444-460 per ton ex-works.


Paving Picks Up in Hungary/Romania


Road paving activity surged in the region. Romania’s import market saw strong cargo flows into Black Sea terminals.

Steady Prices in the Baltics


Orlen Lietuva in Lithuania maintained steady ex-works truck prices at its Mazeikiai refinery. Prices held at $481 per ton for pen grades 50/70 and 70/100, and $505 per ton for pen grades 100/150 and 160/220. Warmer Nordic weather boosted road bitumen demand. Sweden’s construction sector led the upturn.
