The bitumen market in August shows weak demand in central Europe, steady but competitive conditions in the Balkans, and active construction-driven imports in North Europe. Ukraine’s imports fell compared with July, while Turkey cut its domestic truck prices.
Central Europe
Demand in Poland and the Czech Republic stayed low in August but may improve in September. In the Czech Republic, elections in October could stimulate activity. Ukraine’s imported bitumen prices came under pressure because of high supply. Prices at the western border were at 29,500–30,500 hryvnia/t (€609–630/t), down by 100 hryvnia/t.
Polish refiner Orlen kept export prices at €465–470/t, while Unimot reduced values to €476/t. Turkish-origin product in Romania’s Galati terminal stayed at $525/t. Ukraine imported almost 10,700t in early August, down by 1,900t from July.
Balkans
Hungarian domestic prices were stable at €440–455/t, but Romanian prices dropped €10/t to €425–440/t due to competition from regional cargoes. Bulgarian domestic prices fell by €12/t to €403–428/t. Suppliers from Greece and Turkey continued shipping cargoes into Ukrainian ports and the wider region.
Nordics & Baltics
Bitumen demand was high in the Baltic states after weather delays earlier in the summer. However, Nordic imports slowed, with only one tracked tanker arriving in Finland. Another shipment from Greece and Spain was expected later in August.
Morocco & Algeria
Morocco and Algeria remained active in construction, driving steady imports. Algeria’s new rules requiring import approval caused only minor delays, not the major disruptions initially feared. Cargoes arrived at several Algerian ports including Skikda, Arzew, and Algiers.
Turkey
Turkish refiner Tupras reduced its truck prices to TL19,079/t ($468/t), down TL156/t ($5/t). Construction activity stayed similar to July, although a heatwave slowed progress. Tupras also exported cargoes to France and Ireland in mid-August.
Outlook
Market participants expect demand in central Europe to recover in September, supported by seasonal activity and political events in the Czech Republic. Competitive supplies in the Balkans will likely keep prices under pressure, while North Europe remain active due to ongoing infrastructure projects. In Turkey, price adjustments are expected to follow international fuel trends.
