Bitumen 60/70
Bitumen has lots of grades and types one of which is bitumen 60/70.
This grade of penetration bitumen types is considered as a hard grade with a low
penetration rate compared to other types and is suitable for tropical
climates such as tropical countries.
In the following, we will become more familiar with the meaning of the
figures such as 60/70, 80/100, the specification, and the application
of bitumen 60/70.
It’s good to know about the meaning of the distinct figures of the bitumen
types in the first place. As a matter of fact, bitumen divides into several
groups according to the various bitumen tests and their results. The aforementioned tests, determine the penetration, ductility,
performance, viscosity, and other factors of bitumen. These tests are
largely determinative in the bitumen specification and its application.
Generally speaking, Bitumen penetration grade 60/70 means the penetration
rate varies in the range of 60 to 70 at standard test conditions.
This indicates that the tested grade is applicable for the production of
hot mix asphalt for bases and pavements and road construction.
Bitumen tests and results
According to the bitumen tests, the hardest grades are bitumen 60/70,
85/100, and all those types that are low in penetration. Moreover, they are highly suitable for tropical climates and regions. On the other hand, those grades
with a high rate of penetration are appropriate for cold regions. In fact, they are softer grades. One of the most demanded types among the
soft grades is bitumen 200-300.
According to what we have mentioned before, soft grades have a high
demand in cold regions such as Canada, Russia, China, etc.
More about the bitumen 60/70 applications
The constructors usually apply bitumen 60-70 penetration grade for
pavements where traffic is high. The reason is the hardness, strength,
and specifications that allow it to be strong against heavy loads. Needless
to mention that this grade has a high demand in different countries in the world.
Many countries import this type and apply it for their construction, pavings,
and repairs. It’s essential to know which grade is suitable, otherwise, the
project will collapse, causes extra costs, cracks, and serious troubles. As the ultimate point, there are bitumen emulsions and cutbacks that are also
suitable for various applications and regions, but bitumen 60/70 is the most
well-known bitumen type in the world. Many countries prefer to lead
their projects in a traditional way, by applying bitumen penetration grades 60/70.
In sum, bitumen 60/70 has the highest demand among other types. Moreover, the Middle Eastern countries are predominant in the field of exporting
bitumen and petrochemicals, especially penetration grades. That is why the
rate of exports from the Mideast is noticeable.
